STORIES

At City with Dwellings, we believe every individual’s journey is unique.

On this page, we share the heart of our mission: the real-life journeys of individuals navigating homelessness. These narratives offer a glimpse into the diverse experiences, challenges, and triumphs of our neighbors, while highlighting the person-centered care CWD provides.

Our approach focuses on the individual, honoring their unique needs, strengths, and goals. We work alongside each person, building trusting relationships and co-creating pathways to stability and well-being. These stories are testaments to resilience, the power of human connection, and the transformative impact of a caring, individualized approach.

"The true measure of any society can be found in how it treats its most vulnerable members." – Mahatma Gandhi

City With Dwelling Stories - Vern
VERN’S RESILIENCE

Vern, a Winston-Salem native, has been a familiar face at City with Dwellings for years. After losing his job, apartment, and truck in 2016, Vern’s life took a turn for the worse. He spent years living in his truck, a rundown camper, shelters, and on couches. Despite his health struggles, he has maintained a cheerful attitude and is known for his humor, often impersonating Jim Carrey and Robin Williams. Now, he’s working on recovery and hopes to soon be in his own apartment — a huge step after years of instability. His story shows the importance of consistent support and the power of resilience.

City With Dwelling Stories - Contieth
CONTIETH’S JOURNEY

Contieth is one of our formerly unhoused neighbors who, with assistance from City With Dwellings, has been living in an apartment for over a year now. In addition to being an abstract artist, Contieth helps to keep our program space clean for all of us who work in the space. When he first came to City With Dwellings every day, he would pick up trash and do other
tasks to help out. “I like helping people,” says Contieth. He learned not to judge people experiencing homelessness and wishes others would too.

City With Dwelling Stories - Stuart
STUART’S FRESH START

Stuart, originally from High Point, dreamed of becoming a science teacher when he attended East Carolina University. But life’s challenges led him to drop out before finishing his degree. After facing homelessness, he found a new chance with City With Dwellings in Winston-Salem, who helped him secure a housing voucher. Now, living in his own apartment through Rapid Rehousing rent assistance funds, Stuart is excited to have his own bathroom and a life without the pressure of homelessness. He’s grateful for the support he’s received and says, “Without hope, you’re lost.” Stuart’s story is a testament to how second chances and a little help can get you back on track.

MARIE'S NEW COMMUNITY

Marie faced homelessness for an extended period, which took a serious toll. Since moving into her new apartment in April 2024, she has fully embraced her new life. Marie stands firm on the belief that “everyone matters” and has become a super neighbor, always ready to help others in need. She consistently goes out of her way to assist neighbors and provide support. Marie has leaned on Carlos, one of CwD’s Certified Peer Support Specialists, for assistance with accessing food pantries and laundry services. More importantly, he provides regular check-ins, offering a listening ear and emotional support. Marie’s transformation highlights the power of housing stability, not just for meeting basic needs but also for re-engaging in community and building connections. Today, she is thriving and giving back to the community that once helped her.
